Sustainability

As our efforts in supporting sustainable fisheries activities, we join several fisheries improvement programs. One of the programs is FIP Purse Seine in South East Sulawesi.

Observer on Board Training

The existence of observer on board is one of the important keys in fisheries activities to be more sustainable. The data collection conducted by the observer became one of the foundations of the government in supporting the governance and formulation of fisheries policy. As the implementer of the purse seine fishery improvement program in South East Sulawesi, PT. Pahala Bahari Nusantara participated together with Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and other NGO partners in the observer on board program. We participated in the training of observer on board which was conducted on December 13 -18, 2020 in Ambon. A total of 20 participants attended the training.

In this training, the candidate are given materials and several practices to describe activities in the field including sampling bait on pole and line fisheries, measuring fish length, taking gonads and submitting data in e-form applications. On this training opportunity, senior observers shared their experiences with participants not only about the initial obstacles in monitoring but also how to interact and place themselves on board with the vessel crew.

Along with the increasing need for observer on board, especially by industries that are members of the fisheries improvement program (FIP), observer training was conducted again on September 13 -17, 2021 in Tegal, Central Java. The training was attended by 22 participants

Observer placement on FIP Purse Seine vessel in South East Sulawesi

In addition to participating and supporting observer on board training, we are also committed to placing observer on board our supplier vessel. The placement of observer on board has been carried out since 2020. By the end of 2021, there were 16 observers in Southeast Sulawesi who monitored fishing vessels, one of which was the FIP purse seine vessel. More than 140 fishing trips on purse seine vessels in Southeast Sulawesi have been covered by observers between 2020 and 2021. The placement of observer in our supplier vessels always coordinate with our FIP field staff and Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. Vessel owners, fishermen and captains welcome the program and hope the observer placement program can continues in the future.

GPS Installation

GPS Tracker is one of the tools used in monitoring fishing vessels. Currently, only vessels above 30 GT are mandatory to using VMS (Vessel Monitoring System). We are committed to continuously improve the fisheries especially in purse seine sector with installing gps tracker in our purse seine supplier. This tool can later be a proof of verification by fishermen not involved in IUU Fishing. The installation of this tool is also our commitment in maintaining the safety of our supplier vessel crew. Installation has been carried out gradually since 2021, until now has installed 11 units on our purse seine supplier in Southeast Sulawesi.
